Trying not to try?
So after a much needed rest and back massage this blog is back and says hello to all the people of the New Year. In the past, this blog dealt mainly with trying to cope with the world around you, but something tells me now that the essence of Gandhi is more than that. It is about forging new paths and new identities. Trying to create a man/woman of the world, for the world and through the world.
And there is this other matter that needs sorting out at the very outset, which is the use of the word "trying" in name of this journal.
The Star Wars movies are ok, but the sayings of the Jedis elevate them from decency into greatness. There is one scene where Luke tells Yoda, "I'll try" or words to that effect. Upon hearing this Yoda visibly ages another three hundred years and rebukes his young pupil, "Do or do not, there is no such thing as trying." Even that other great Jedi Homer Simpson opines, "Trying is the first step towards failure."
So why must we try to be like Gandhi or even try at all?
Because we want to be good, decent beings who use knives only to cut onions, when we feel like crying. At the same time we are caught up in a world of buildings and bills.
Because we are not ascetics. Unlike them we refuse to take the easy way out. It can be quite (sorry for the pun) trying.
In this giant cloud of confusion all we can do is make a leap of faith and reach for intuition.
And something tells me that this time around, it is all a question of practice.
